You’ve had your dermal filler treatment, you love it, and now you move on to the next stage of the treatment; your dermal filler aftercare.

Even when you’ve got a fantastic practitioner (erm, hello, I’m here!), the success of your aesthetic treatment doesn’t just depend on the procedure itself, but also on how well you follow dermal filler aftercare instructions.

It’s a team game. I’ll play my part (very well, if I do say so myself), but then I’ll hand the relay baton over to you.

Proper dermal filler aftercare ensures that you minimise risks, achieve great results, and extend the length of your treatment results.

So, here is your comprehensive guide to dermal filler aftercare.

Immediate Post-Treatment Care

1. Avoid Touching the Treated Areas

After receiving dermal fillers, it’s essential to avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated areas for at least six hours, but ideally longer.

If you get a lip filler treatment in Liverpool, we know you’ll love them, but please, leave them be for now!

This minimises the risk of introducing bacteria that could cause an infection at the injection sites.

The fillers need time to settle into place, and unnecessary manipulation can mess with this process, potentially leading to uneven results or irritation.

2. Stay Hydrated

Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining the results of your dermal fillers, particularly if you’ve received hyaluronic acid-based fillers (which most practitioners use).

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in your skin and binds to water to provide hydration and volume.

Drinking plenty of water after your treatment helps enhance the filler’s ability to attract and retain moisture, leaving your skin looking plump and rejuvenated.

3. Limit Strenuous Activities

Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 24 to 48 hours after your treatment (yes, that’s permission to skip the gym for two days).

Increased blood flow from vigorous activity can MAKE swelling and bruising worse at the injection sites.

Instead, go for light activities like walking to keep your body moving without overdoing it.

By giving your body time to heal, you’ll have a better recovery and better results.

4. Avoid Heat and Sun Exposure

Heat, such as from saunas, hot showers, or direct sunlight, can increase inflammation and swelling.

Heat may also degrade the filler material prematurely, reducing the longevity of your results.

Protect your skin by staying in cool environments for at least 24 hours and using sunscreen if you need to go outdoors.

Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is particularly effective at safeguarding your skin post-treatment. Learn more about protecting your skin from sun damage at SkinCancer.org.

5. Wait Before Applying Makeup

Although it’s tempting to cover any redness or swelling with makeup, it’s recommended to wait at least six hours before applying any.

This waiting period reduces the risk of introducing bacteria to the treated areas, which could lead to infection or irritation.

Once it’s safe to wear makeup, opt for non-comedogenic and gentle products to avoid clogging your pores.

6. Avoid Alcohol and Blood Thinners

So no going out for martinis after your appointments (you know who you are!)

Alcohol and medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen should be avoided for 24 hours after your treatment.

These substances thin your blood, which increase the likelihood of bruising at the injection sites.

Instead, focus on consuming nutrient-rich foods and staying hydrated to support your body’s healing process.

7. Alternate Heat & Cold Compress

If swelling or discomfort occurs, alternating between a hot and cold compress can provide relief.

Wrap an ice pack in a soft cloth and gently place it on the treated areas for 15 minutes every hour. Cold therapy works by constricting blood vessels, reducing swelling and inflammation.

Then, look at applying the likes of a heat pack. The benefits of heat and cold therapy https://www.firstaid4less.co.uk/Hot-Cold-Therapy have shown to really make an impact on recovery, and these simple steps can make a noticeable difference in your post-treatment comfort.

Expected Results and Potential Side Effects

When to Expect Results

One of the great benefits of dermal fillers is that you’ll see immediate improvement in the treated areas.

However, it’s important to note that final results typically settle within two weeks as any swelling goes down and the fillers integrate with your natural tissues.

Patience is key during this process to appreciate the full benefits of your dermal filler treatment.

Temporary Side Effects

It’s normal to experience minor side effects after your dermal filler procedure.

These may include swelling, redness, and bruising around the injection sites, which usually resolve within a few days (you have had needle injections after all!).

Using arnica gel or taking certain supplements, (with your practitioner’s approval, of course), can help reduce these symptoms.

Longevity of Results

The longevity of your results will depend on the type of filler used and the area treated.

On average, dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 to 18 months (I’ve had clients whose jawline filler has genuinely lasted that long).

It also depends on your metabolism and how your body breaks things down. For example, I’ve got a PT client whose metabolism who’s body naturally breaks hyaluronic acid down quicker than others. As is life!

Following proper dermal filler aftercare, such as avoiding sun damage and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, can help extend the life of your treatment as long as possible.

When to Contact Your Practitioner

Recognising Unusual Symptoms

While complications are very rare, it’s crucial to monitor for unusual symptoms such as persistent lumps, severe pain, or signs of infection like excessive redness and warmth.

Contact your practitioner immediately if you experience any of these issues to address them promptly.

Scheduling Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-up appointments are an excellent opportunity to assess your results and discuss any concerns with your practitioner.

Tips for Maintaining Your Results

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Sun protection is vital for maintaining the effects of your dermal fillers and preventing premature aging.

Incorporate a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 into your daily routine, and reapply as needed throughout the day.

Sun exposure can break down filler material more quickly, so protecting your skin is essential.

Maintain a Consistent Skincare Routine

A tailored skincare routine can help enhance and prolong the benefits of your treatment.

Use gentle cleansers, hydrating serums, and moisturizers to keep your skin healthy and radiant.
