A chemical peel can work wonders for your skin, revealing a brighter, smoother, and more youthful complexion, but how you follow chemical peel aftercare steps plays a big part in the outcome.

Honestly, the key to achieving the best results lies in proper chemical peel aftercare. I always go on about it in the clinic (as a lot will know), but there’s a reason for it.

You play a huge part in the results you get.

Taking care of your skin post-treatment ensures optimal healing and minimizes the risk of complications.

Here’s everything you need to know about caring for your skin with our chemical peel aftercare guide.

1. Follow Your Practitioner’s Instructions

Every chemical peel is different, and your chemical peel aftercare plan may vary depending on the type and depth of the peel (is it a chemical peel, is it BioRePeel etc etc).

Be sure to adhere to the specific guidelines provided by your practitioner (hopefully that’s me!), as we will tailor the advice to your unique treatment and skin type.

2. Avoid Touching or Picking at Your Skin

I get how tough this step is, as I’m serial sub-conscious picker.

As your skin begins to peel and regenerate, it may feel dry or flaky.

While it’s so tempting to pick at peeling skin, resist the urge. Picking skin can lead to irritation, scarring, or infection, so if you catch yourself, try and stop.

Let the peeling process happen naturally.

3. Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Hydration is essential after a chemical peel, and hydration is essential for your skin full stop.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep your skin soft and supple (such as our Light Moisturiser). Look for products with soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or aloe vera to calm irritation and support healing

It will definitely have an impact.

4. Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight after a chemical peel, and despite us getting a tan from it, the sun and our skin are not friends and there is a dark side to sun exposure.

Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible, and always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

Reapply throughout the day, even if you’re indoors, as UV rays can penetrate windows.

5. Avoid Harsh Skincare Products

For at least one week following your peel, avoid using:

  • Retinoids or retinol
  • AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxy acids)
  • Exfoliants or scrubs
  • Harsh cleansers These products can irritate your skin and delay the healing process.

This will help your skin regenerate at a quicker rate.

6. Be Patient with Results

It’s important to remember that your skin may look red or feel sensitive in the days immediately following the treatment.

Peeling typically begins 2-3 days post-treatment and can last up to a week, so bear this in mind if you have any events coming up.

The final results will emerge once your skin has fully healed, revealing a radiant and rejuvenated appearance.

7. Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet

Hydration isn’t just about moisturisers; drink plenty of water to support your skin’s recovery from within.

A balanced diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants promotes skin healing and overall health (so avoid the junk food, even just for a week).

8. Avoid Heat and Sweating

For the first few days after your chemical peel or BioRePeel, avoid activities that generate heat or sweat, such as intense exercise, saunas, or hot showers.

Heat can irritate your sensitive skin and prolong recovery time, so I give you permission to rest from the gym for a few days.

9. Monitor for Unusual Reactions

While mild redness, peeling, and dryness are normal, watch for signs of complications such as excessive swelling, severe pain, or signs of infection (e.g., pus, increased redness).

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your practitioner immediately.

10. Schedule Follow-Up Appointments

Depending on your skincare goals, your practitioner may recommend a series of chemical peels over time for optimal results.

Be sure to attend any follow-up appointments to track your progress and discuss further treatments if needed.

Proper aftercare is crucial to maximize the benefits of your chemical peel and ensure a smooth recovery.

By following these chemical peel aftercare steps and working closely with your practitioner, you can enjoy a radiant, glowing complexion that lasts.
